The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed as misleading a publication titled “Ogun Police, Tenants and the Peril of Criminalising Civil Disputes,” insisting that the matter in question was investigated strictly as a criminal complaint bordering on assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Command said the report circulating on online platforms distorted facts and failed to accurately represent the professional handling of the incident which occurred in the Ajuwon area of the state.
According to the statement, the case was reported to the police on April 9, 2026, by a family member of the victim, who alleged that the victim was involved in an altercation with tenants over electricity-related issues, leading to physical confrontation and a subsequent medical emergency involving the landlord.
The Command explained that upon receiving the complaint, police officers followed standard investigative procedures by inviting the parties involved, assessing the scene, and obtaining statements from relevant individuals.
The police maintained that the matter was treated strictly as a case of assault and breach of peace, stressing that all actions taken were in line with constitutional provisions and established police procedures.
The statement further disclosed that the parties were granted administrative bail while efforts were made to de-escalate tensions and encourage amicable resolution of the dispute.
According to the Command, the complainant later withdrew the matter formally through a written letter after both parties reportedly resolved the issue amicably.
The police also denied allegations of unlawful detention, insisting that no individual was detained outside lawful provisions.
“For the avoidance of doubt, at no time were any persons unlawfully detained. All police actions taken were strictly within constitutional and procedural limits, including lawful invitation, investigation, and administrative bail,” the statement read.
The Command also noted that it had earlier responded to a media platform that sought clarification on the matter through the office of the Police Public Relations Officer, but expressed disappointment that the eventual publication allegedly contained selective interpretation and deliberate misrepresentation of facts.
The police cautioned against what it described as attempts to distort facts and undermine public confidence in lawful policing and due process.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and neutrality, the Ogun State Police Command urged members of the public to disregard sensational reports and rely on verified information from official police communication channels.
