The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has approved disciplinary actions affecting members in Ogun and Delta States, emerging as a major highlight of its meeting held in Abuja on April 29, 2026.
The council, which met under the leadership of its National President, Alhassan Yahya, ratified the suspension of seven members of the Ogun State Council for instituting legal action against the union without first exhausting internal dispute resolution mechanisms, a move deemed to contravene Article 7 (5d) of the NUJ Constitution.
Those suspended include Wole Shokunbi, Folake Ade-Adeniji, Razak Ayinla, Modupe Salabiu, Joke Adeleye, Kunle Ibukunle, Seun Odunlami, and Sekinat Salam-Opebiyi.
In a related development, NEC approved the reinstatement of the Delta State Council Secretary, Victor Soroku, after adopting the report of a fact-finding committee set up to investigate a petition against him.
Beyond disciplinary matters, NEC deliberated on a wide range of national and professional issues, including journalists’ welfare, insecurity, the state of government-owned media, and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The council also passed a vote of confidence in the Yahya-led leadership, citing strides in welfare initiatives, training programmes, and institutional reforms aimed at repositioning the union.
The communiqué, signed by the National Secretary, Achike Chude, reaffirmed NEC’s commitment to discipline, professionalism, and unity within the union, stressing the importance of adherence to constitutional provisions in resolving internal disputes.
