The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned what it described as a “reckless and violent” statement allegedly made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, against a Channels Television journalist, Seun Okinbaloye, calling for an immediate apology and decisive action by the Federal Government.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the union said it was “profoundly shocked and outraged” by the Minister’s reported comment: “If there’s any way to break the screen, I would have shot him,” describing it as a direct threat capable of intimidating media practitioners and undermining press freedom.
The NUJ noted that it had initially withheld its reaction in anticipation of a possible retraction or apology from the Minister. However, the absence of such a response, it said, suggests the comment was not a mere slip but a deliberate attempt to intimidate the press.
“The regrettable silence has only deepened our concern and reinforced the perception that the threat was intentional,” the statement read.
According to the union, such remarks from a senior government official create a hostile environment for journalists and send a dangerous signal that critical reporting could attract threats or violence.
“This is entirely contrary to the principles of a free press and democratic governance,” the NUJ stated, warning that the safety of journalists must not be compromised under any circumstance.
The union, therefore, demanded an “immediate and unreserved apology” from the FCT Minister, while also urging the Federal Government to publicly condemn the statement and take concrete steps to protect journalists across the country.
It further called on media organisations, civil society groups and pro-democracy advocates to unite in resisting what it described as a blatant attack on press freedom.
“The safety and security of journalists are paramount to a healthy democracy, and any attempt to silence them must be met with a firm and collective response,” the statement added.
The statement was signed by the NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, and dated April 5, 2026.
