  • Ikangba Community Urges Ogun Governor to Intervene in Land Crisis, Cites Threat to Lives The people of Ikangba Community in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State have appealed to the state Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to urgently intervene in an escalating land dispute which they alleged had resulted in harassment, sporadic shootings and threats to the lives of residents. The community made the appeal at a press conference, where its representatives expressed concern that continued activities by individuals they described as alleged land grabbers could further threaten the peace and security of the area. According to the Oluweri Osundekun, secretary of the Yeye-imule Family Descendants Of Ijebu-ode who addressed the press said that the crisis had also involved the alleged deployment of security personnel in attempts to take possession of its ancestral land, prompting the intervention of security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force. The community alleged that two of its indigenes were previously arrested and detained at the DSS office in Abeokuta in connection with the dispute, but were later released after documentary evidence supporting the community’s position was presented and reviewed. It further claimed that the DSS Director, after hearing from the parties and examining the circumstances surrounding the dispute, warned those involved against actions capable of disrupting peace in Ikangba. The community said a similar intervention was made by the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, who reportedly invited the parties, listened to their positions and warned the alleged land grabbers to stay away from the disputed property. Despite these interventions, the community alleged that harassment had continued, with reports of maiming and sporadic shooting on the disputed land. The people of Ikangba also alleged that the alleged land grabbers enjoyed the backing of the Idowa traditional institution, particularly the Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adefuwape, whom they accused of contributing to the persistence of the crisis. However, the community stressed that it was not seeking to prejudge the matter or usurp the powers of the courts and security agencies, but wanted the dispute resolved through lawful and due process. It said it had already approached the Ogun State Anti-Land Grabbing Task Force and other relevant security agencies, while also appealing to the state government for intervention. The community therefore urged Governor Abiodun to direct a thorough and impartial investigation into the dispute, protect all parties involved and ensure that ownership of the land was determined through due process. It also called for an immediate halt to the alleged use of security personnel or private agents to intimidate residents, stressing that no individual should be allowed to use influence or connections to dispossess citizens of their ancestral property. The community appealed to the leadership of the DSS and the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that their personnel were not used, directly or indirectly, to enforce private claims in land disputes. While calling on all parties to sheathe their swords and embrace peaceful resolution, the people of Ikangba warned that nobody should be allowed to enter the disputed land with firearms, threaten residents, maim anyone or engage in sporadic shooting while the matter is being resolved. The community urged the Governor, Commissioner of Police, DSS leadership, Anti-Land Grabbing Task Force and other relevant authorities to act swiftly to prevent further escalation. It said its primary demands were justice, peace and protection, stressing that it did not want violence or confrontation with security agencies or traditional institutions. The community appealed to the media to amplify its concerns, saying urgent intervention was necessary to prevent the crisis from claiming an innocent life. The people of Ikangba maintained that they remained committed to peaceful resolution of the dispute and expressed confidence that the state government would ensure that the rule of law prevailed.

Engr. Sunday Onyedikachi Okorie obtained a B.Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State (UNAD) in 2009, now known as Ekiti State University (EKSU). During his B.Eng. studies, he was posted to Dana Motors (KIA Motors) in Lagos State for a six-month industrial training course, during which he gathered extensive knowledge in the automotive industry. During this period, he was exposed to comprehensive understanding of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) operation, overhauling, and wheel alignment. He was also exposed to a deep knowledge of preventive, corrective and breakdown maintenance of automobile engine and suspension systems.

Upon graduation from his B.Eng. studies, he was posted to Gidan Waya community in Kafanchan LGA in Kaduna State, where he served the Nigerian Government as a Youth Corper in Gidan Waya Secondary School (GSS).

At GSS, he held the position of a Mathematics, Additional Mathematics and Physics teacher.

He was fully involved in his students’ academic well-being, which also led him to volunteer to offer free extra weekend classes to improve their academic performance, which is also part of his community service and a means of giving back to society.

Due to his immense impact on Dana Motors (KIA Motors) during his Industrial Training, he was offered a job by Dana Motors (KIA Motors) immediately after his Youth Corper service period at GSS, for which he worked for a short period of 1 year as an automobile maintenance Engineer before proceeding for his M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering at the Liaoning University of Technology, in the People’s Republic of China. During his M.Eng. research period at the University, he was exposed to an in-depth knowledge of engineering principles and applications with the help of advanced laboratory equipment, machines, computer-aided design (CAD) tools and simulation software.

During this period, he was attached to Dong Fang International Container (Jinzhou) Co. Ltd. for further industrial research and experience, where he gained vast experience in Shipping Container design and manufacturing process. His attachment to Dong Fang International Container (Jinzhou) Co. Ltd was instrumental to his online article publication and graduation thesis since both were related to Shipping Container design and manufacture, especially in paint spraying techniques. He was later attached to Jinzhou Halla Electrical Equipment Co. Ltd (JHEECO) as an industrial research trainee and to Jinzhou Dongxing Packaging Co., Ltd for more research and industrial exposure. His multiple research and industrial exposures during his M.Eng. program built an excellent engineering background for Engr. Sunday’s industrial knowledge and impact in the field of Engineering.

In 2015, after graduating as one of the best students in his M.Eng. class coupled with his proficiency in Chinese language (Mandarin) and his immense contribution to JHEECO during his Industrial Training period, he was recalled by JHEECO for a job offer, as an automobile alternator design Engineer, where he immediately rose to the position of a Project Supervisor within his first one and half year at the company.

Upon taking up the job offer by JHEECO, he made history by becoming the first African in Jinzhou ever to own a work visa in industry and commerce. He worked with JHEECO for a total period of seven and a half years.
In 2019, he held the “Liaoning Intermediate Professional Certificate of Speciality and Technology”.

In 2021, Engr. Sunday was inducted as a Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) corporate member. Later, in 2021, he became registered with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) after meeting all the requirements contained in the COREN Act and was duly licensed to practice engineering.

To date, Engr. Sunday Onyedikachi Okorie has remained an erudite in his field and has had remarkable impacts. He remains a respected leader and an emulation icon to aspiring young engineers. We are blessed to have an impactful Engineer of his calibre in our society, and we do not take this for granted. As a certified Mechanical Engineer with proven success in the industry, he has participated in numerous Continuing Professional Development Programs at home and abroad to keep up with the trends in Engineering and Management.
In mid-2022, in the quest for more challenges in the field of engineering, he moved to Luxshare Precision Industry Co., Ltd, located in Kunshan, China, where he is currently working as a Technical Project Manager as at the time of this publication. At Luxshare, he is the Technical Lead Engineer for overseas projects involving wireless device charger and USB hub design and manufacture.

Engr. Sunday Okorie has also been into volunteering and community services since his university days and Youth Corper service period in Gidan Waya of Kaduna State.

Since 2022, he has been an active member of the Helping Hands Club in China. This non-governmental organisation was involved in distributing COVID-19 after-effect relief materials to diaspora communities in China and organising self-protection seminars to create awareness of ways to prevent the future spread of diseases and infections.
To date, Engr. Sunday Okorie has been an active player in engineering and has never held back from giving back to society. His leadership role has also encouraged young engineers and aspiring youths. He has also been invited to speak at several leadership and engineering seminars in China for international students and practising young Engineers.
