…hands Over Seized Drugs, Arms to NDLEA, NCCSALW

The Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded significant achievements in revenue generation and anti-smuggling operations in 2025, generating over ₦454.6 million for the Federal Government and intercepting contraband items with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of more than ₦4.13 billion.

The Acting Customs Area Controller of Customs,, OO Afeni disclosed the landmark achievements on Thursday while briefing press at Idiroko headquarters on the Command’s 2025 and January 2026 scorecard where he formally hand over seized cannabis sativa, ammunition, and other prohibited items to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW).

Afeni attributed the Command’s performance to its unwavering commitment to the core mandates of the Nigeria Customs Service, which include revenue generation, anti-smuggling, and trade facilitation.

According to him, the Command generated and remitted a total of ₦454,672,406.30 in 2025 to federation and non-federation accounts, representing a 47 per cent increase compared to the ₦275,835,602 collected in 2024.

He noted that the positive trend has continued into 2026, with the Command generating ₦106,277,312 between January 1 and January 28, 2026—an 84.3 per cent increase over the ₦89,584,419 recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

Afeni explained that the improved revenue performance was achieved through diligent enforcement by Customs officers and cooperation from compliant traders, with revenue largely derived from baggage assessment and proceeds from auction sales of seized Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

On anti-smuggling operations, the Acting Controller revealed that the Command recorded a total of 487 seizures in 2025, driven by credible intelligence, inter-agency collaboration, and intensified border patrols.

Items seized during the period included 22,725 bags of foreign parboiled rice equivalent to 37 trailer loads, 2,669 kegs of PMS containing 66,725 litres, 13,332 parcels of cannabis sativa, 2,128 cartridges, 11 foreign used vehicles, 25 bales of used clothing, 2,034 used tyres, 1,315 pieces of explosives, various firearms including dane guns, revolver pistols, locally made guns, as well as hard drugs such as crystal meth and heroin.

He stated that the total DPV of seizures in 2025 stood at ₦4,130,931,100, a sharp increase of over ₦2.33 billion compared to the ₦1.79 billion recorded in 2024.

Afeni further disclosed that between January 1 and January 29, 2026, the Command had already made fresh seizures, including 1,042 bags of smuggled rice, 3,738 parcels of cannabis sativa, 780 used tyres, firearms and cartridges, 473 kegs of PMS, six used vehicles, caffeine anhydrous suspected substances pending NAFDAC examination, medicinal products, and traditional carvings undergoing expert appraisal.

He described the achievements as a testament to the dedication and professionalism of officers of the Command, stressing that Customs would continue to protect the economy and safeguard public health and security.

The seized cannabis sativa, arms, and ammunition were subsequently handed over to the NDLEA and NCCSALW for further investigation and prosecution, in line with existing laws.
The Acting Area Controller reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to consolidate its gains in 2026 through sustained intelligence-led operations and stronger collaboration with sister security agencies.
