Ogun Journalist Launches New Book as Experts Urge Nigerians to Prepare Early for Healthy Ageing

A renewed call for Nigerians to adopt healthier lifestyles and show greater compassion toward the elderly took centre stage in Abeokuta as journalist and author Olamilekan Jaji unveiled his latest book on ageing.

The event, held at the Iwe-Iroyin Press Centre, brought together scholars, health professionals, community leaders and students for a public lecture focused on the realities of ageing and the responsibilities of younger generations.

Jaji, speaking at the unveiling of his book Ageing for You and Me, explained that the work was inspired by the growing need for better awareness of senior care in Nigeria. He noted that ageing should be seen as a privilege rather than a burden, stressing the importance of nutrition, emotional balance, empathy and early preparation for later life.

“Our choices today determine the quality of our tomorrow,” he said, calling on families to support older relatives with patience, understanding and consistent care.

Guest lecturer and consultant psychiatrist Dr. Folakemi Ogundele reinforced the message, warning that the mental health of senior citizens is often overlooked. She pointed out that ageing comes with natural changes in memory, sleep and emotional stability, and that untreated depression, anxiety, dementia and isolation are common challenges faced by older adults.

Dr. Ogundele emphasized that the foundation for a healthy old age is laid in youth. Habits formed early—good nutrition, regular medical checkups, emotional awareness and avoidance of drug abuse—significantly influence wellbeing later in life.

She also cautioned families against dismissing warning signs of mental health issues or mislabelling them as spiritual problems, stressing that timely medical attention can prevent avoidable crises.

Chairman of the occasion, Rear Admiral Ayodele Oshunmakinde (rtd), commended the book’s timely release, noting that Nigeria’s ageing population continues to grow and requires deliberate social and health support structures.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of humanitarian awards to Dr. Babatunde Adeyemo and Mr. Dotun Oladipupo, both recognized for their long-standing contributions to vulnerable groups and community welfare.

The event ultimately underscored a shared message: ageing well begins long before old age — and society must collectively ensure that senior citizens remain valued, supported and understood.
