Abeokuta, Ogun State – Engr. Olumayowa Idowu, FNSE, Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Abeokuta Branch, recently led a high-impact STEM Advocacy Programme in Abeokuta, highlighting the critical importance of gender inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

The programme, hosted at Oba Adedapo Tejuoso Auditorium, Taidob College, Asero Estate, brought together over 200 participants, including students and teachers from 20 secondary schools, as well as educators, policymakers, and development partners with the goal of advancing STEM learning and inspiring young girls to pursue careers in Engineering and technology.

Organised by the Rockcity Centre for Media and Leadership Development (RCMLD), the event featured interactive sessions, quizzes, and mentorship opportunities designed to cultivate STEM talent among secondary school students.

Engr. Idowu, who served as Guest of Honour and Quiz Co-ordinator, engaged participants in activities that combined learning with fun, stressing the value of practical knowledge, critical thinking, and equal opportunities for all genders in STEM fields.

The host, Dr. Niran Malaolu, welcomed the distinguished guests and participants to the programme. In her keynote address, the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Her Excellency Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, FNSE, highlighted the state’s commitment to promoting STEM education, particularly for young women.

In her lecture, Prof. (Mrs.) Aderonke Samuel, Head of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Lagos, reinforced the significance of mentorship and early exposure to STEM disciplines.

The presence of Former Ogun Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, the Olowu of Owu, Oba Engr. Prof. Saka Adelola Matemilola, FNSE (Oluyalo Otileta VII) and the Ogun State Commissioners for Education, Women Development, and Youth & Sports further underscored the importance of targeted initiatives to support female students in science and Engineering careers.

The programme reflects the dedication of NSE Abeokuta and its partners to building a future-ready STEM ecosystem in Nigeria, ensuring that talented students, especially young women, acquire the skills, confidence, and inspiration necessary to excel in Engineering and technology.
