In significant breakthrough on anti  smuggling campaign and war against hard drugs,  the Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted contraband goods worth a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N4.63 billion(Four Billion, sixty three million naira) and generated N259.8 million( two hundred and fifty nine million, eight hundred thousand naira ) as revenue between April 1 and June 23, 2026.

The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, who disclosed this on Wednesday during a media briefing at Idiroko, Ogun State, while presenting the Command’s second-quarter performance report explained that the revenue generated during the period under review represented a 238 per cent( two hundred and thirty eight percent) increase over the N76.8 million ( seventy six million ,eight hundred thousand ) collected during the corresponding period in 2025.

Ogun 1 Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni

According to afeni, , the amount was realised from baggage assessments, auction sales of perishable items, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and other statutory charges.

“The Command collected revenue to the tune of N259,777,346.89 during the period under review, compared to N76,814,207 recorded during the same period in 2025, representing an increase of 238 per cent,” he said.

The Customs Comptroller attributed the increase to strict enforcement of import and export regulations as well as improved compliance by importers and clearing agents.

He disclosed that the Command recorded 146 ( one hundred and forty six) seizures within the period, comprising foreign parboiled rice, cannabis sativa, Premium Motor Spirit, footwear, second-hand clothing, tyres, pharmaceuticals and other prohibited items.
A breakdown of the seizures showed that Customs intercepted 2,807 bags of foreign parboiled rice weighing 50kg each, 9,482 parcels of cannabis sativa, 62 sacks of raw marijuana, 16,525 litres of PMS, 475 litres of diesel, 7,642 pieces of footwear, 2,427 pneumatic tyres, 63 sacks of foreign sugar, 73 bales of second-hand clothing, 62 bags of imported flour and 32 cartons of frozen products.

Other items seized included a used vehicle, 10 bags of fertiliser and 100 sachets of Tramadol containing 1,000 tablets of 225mg strength.

Speaking further on some of the major interceptions, Afeni said Customs operatives on June 3 intercepted a truck along the Ijebu-Ode axis carrying 2,427( two thousand, four hundred and twenty seven ) smuggled pneumatic tyres concealed in a vehicle branded with a “For Sale” inscription intended to divert attention from law enforcement officers.

Afeni further revealed that officers acting on intelligence intercepted another truck along the Itori-Wasimi-Abeokuta road conveying 113 ( one hundred and thirteen) bags of foreign rice hidden under bags of cement on June 16.

According to him, the driver allegedly ignored signals to stop and attempted to hit a patrol vehicle before he was eventually apprehended.

He added that on June 14, operatives also intercepted a truck conveying 630 bags of foreign parboiled rice along the Afami-Igbogila axis.

“The Command under my watch has remained relentless in enforcing government fiscal policies and trade guidelines. Consequently, the Command recorded a total number of 146 seizures ranging from Cannabis Sativa, Foreign parboiled rice, Footwears, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), three loads of trucks and other general merchandise from April 1st to the morning of 24 June, 2026.”

“Gentlemen of the press, allow me to highlight some of these significant successes recorded during the period under review. In line with our efforts to prevent fatal road crashes caused by the use of substandard, second-hand tyres, on 3rd June 2026, the command’s patrol team covering Ijebu-Ode axis intercepted a wonder truck with Reg No ENU-660-XY, bearing a deceptive for Sale inscription, boldly written on the truck, designed to divert the attention of our officers, a thorough physical examination revealed that the vehicle was conveying 2,427 pieces of smuggled pneumatic tyres.”

Afeni who warned that the influx of smuggled goods poses threats to local industries and economic growth stated that the cumulative Duty Paid Value of all seizures stood at N4,628,591,970.16.

“Allowing uncustomed goods of this nature into our markets directly undermines and paralyses local industries, ultimately worsening unemployment among our teeming youth,” he said.

On export activities, the Customs Area Controller disclosed that the Command recorded exports totalling 20,972 metric tonnes with a Free-On-Board (FOB) value of N1.049 billion during the period under review.

According to the customs boss, the exported products included white talc, crushed thermal coal and compressed natural gas (CNG).

He posited that the figure represented a significant improvement compared to the same period in 2025 when no export activity was recorded.

As part of ongoing inter-agency collaboration, the customs helmsman announced the handing over of 6,981 parcels of Cannabis Indica, popularly known as “Ghanaian Loud,” and 62 sacks of raw marijuana to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

He also disclosed that 77 cartons of Analgin injections containing 138,600 tubes and 100 sachets of Tramadol would be handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

According to him ” The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is a critical agency primarily responsible for eliminating the cultivation, processing, manufacturing, sale, trafficking, consumption of illicit drugs and psychotropic substances in Nigeria.

In tandem with this mandate, and as part of our commitment to sustained inter-agency collaboration which aligns directly with the policy thrust of
Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, PhD, today, we are handing over another 6,981 parcels of Cannabis Indica (Ghanian loud) in different sizes and 62 sacks of raw marijuana to the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command for further necessary action.

“As part of our sustained enforcement operations to eliminate the influx of unregistered and dangerous drugs into the country, the Command is handing over a substantial seizure of illicit pharmaceuticals to NAFDAC. The seized items include 77 cartons of Analgin injection (138,600 tubes) and 100 sachets of Tramadol, with each sachet containing 10 tablets of 225mg each, which sum up to 1000 tablets of TRAMADOL at 225mg each.”

” This handing over underscores our unwavering synergy with sister agencies in the collective fight against illicit trade and the preservation of national security and inter-agency collaboration in securing our borders.” He Noted.

The Customs boss said the Command had intensified collaboration with sister security agencies and their counterparts in the Republic of Benin to strengthen border security and combat trans-border crimes.

He commended officers and men of the Command for their professionalism and dedication, while also appreciating the support of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose tenure was recently extended by the Federal Government.

” This briefing will be incomplete, if I fail to appreciate the continuous support of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, PhD who also doubles as Chairman WCO. It is my pleasure to also commend the officers and men of Ogun I Area Command for their resilience, professionalism, and dedication to duty.”

” Your hard work and commitment have been instrumental in achieving these milestones. I wish to use this medium to congratulate the Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR PhD on the extension of his tenure in office. This well-deserved extension comes as no surprise, given his tireless dedication to driving the Service forward in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR” Afeni said.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to suppressing smuggling, facilitating legitimate trade and protecting Nigeria’s economic interests.
