The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has formally unveiled Dr. Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as the running mate to its governorship candidate, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The unveiling, held at the party’s state secretariat in Abeokuta, drew a large gathering of party leaders, stakeholders, women and youth groups, as well as supporters from across the state.
The event also witnessed the unexpected appearance of former senator and one-time governorship aspirant, Iyabo Obasanjo, a development that immediately generated speculation about her possible political realignment and return to the PDP.
Speaking after her presentation, Sowunmi-Kolapo expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the confidence reposed in her, describing her nomination as both an honour and a call to greater service.
She pledged loyalty to the PDP and its governorship candidate, assuring members that she would deploy her experience and expertise towards advancing the party’s vision for Ogun State.
She said the PDP ticket offers residents a fresh opportunity to experience responsive governance focused on economic development, youth empowerment, improved education, healthcare delivery and infrastructure renewal.
“Our mission is to restore hope and deliver a government that prioritises the welfare of the people. We are committed to ensuring that development reaches every community across Ogun State,” she stated.
Sowunmi-Kolapo also urged party faithful to remain united and intensify grassroots mobilisation efforts ahead of the election, stressing that voter engagement would be crucial to the party’s success.
In his remarks, Adebutu described his running mate as a highly accomplished professional whose emergence reflects the party’s commitment to competence, inclusiveness and effective leadership.
According to him, her selection followed extensive consultations among party stakeholders and was driven by the need to assemble a formidable team capable of delivering good governance.
Adebutu also reaffirmed his roots in Ogun State, noting that his family has consistently contributed to the development of the state through the provision of infrastructure and support for public institutions.
The PDP standard-bearer maintained that the party remains focused on offering an alternative platform for governance and expressed confidence that the Sowunmi-Kolapo/Adebutu ticket would resonate with voters across the state.
The surprise presence of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, however, remained a major talking point among attendees, with many political observers interpreting the development as a sign of shifting political alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship race in Ogun State.
