As we approach the historic milestone of Ogun State’s 50th anniversary, it is imperative to reflect on the journey of a state that has consistently served as the intellectual and industrial gateway of Nigeria.
Since its creation in 1976, one institution has remained an unwavering witness and partner in its evolution: The Media.
Drawing strength from the legendary “founding fathers” of Nigerian journalism—many of whom hailed from this very soil—the Ogun State media space has moved from being mere observers to becoming active architects of the state’s transformation.
From the era of pioneers like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who understood the power of the press in nation-building, the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has maintained a pedigree of excellence that remains unmatched.
Over the past five decades, we have seen the baton of leadership pass through various hands. We must appreciate all those who have steered the ship of this state—from the early Military Administrators who laid the structural foundations to the various Civilian Governors who have added layers of democratic growth. Each leader, including the current administration, has contributed to the mosaic of development we see today in our infrastructure, education, and industrial sectors.
It is easy to point out where the shoes pinch, but it is equally important to acknowledge that it is not all bad. While there is always room for improvement, Ogun State is on a trajectory of growth. We are no longer just a “hinterland” to Lagos; we are a self-sustaining economic powerhouse.
However, as we move closer to the electioneering period, the media’s role becomes even more critical. We must ensure that “The Gateway State” is not just a fancy nomenclature or a geographical label, but a living reality of seamless progress. All hands must be on deck.
Politicians, security agencies, and the electorate must work in synergy with the press to ensure that our transition periods are peaceful and focused on merit.
Moving forward, our goal is clear: to ensure Ogun State moves so fast toward its desired destination that our potential becomes our daily reality.
The media will continue to hold the light, ensuring that the next 50 years are even more glorious than the last.
