
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), NTA Abeokuta Chapel, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Comrade Hakeem Akintunde, a former Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter, and a seasoned journalist with Ogun State Television (OGTV).
In a condolence tribute issued on behalf of its leadership and members, the chapel described the late Akintunde as a consummate professional, astute sports journalist, and committed unionist whose contributions to journalism and sports development in Ogun State would remain indelible.
The union noted that throughout his career, the late media practitioner distinguished himself by his uncommon dedication, integrity, humility, and passion for excellence. According to the statement, Akintunde served as a mentor to many young journalists and was a strong advocate for unity, professionalism, and ethical standards within the media industry.
Reflecting on his tenure as SWAN Chairman in Ogun State, the NUJ said his leadership was marked by progress, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of members, as well as the advancement of sports journalism in the state.
“At OGTV, he served with diligence and patriotism, contributing immensely to the station’s reputation as a leading public broadcaster,” the statement added.
The NUJ NTA Abeokuta Chapel extended heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Union of Journalists, OGTV Chapel, the Ogun State Council of NUJ, SWAN Ogun State Chapter, and the immediate family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
The union prayed for the repose of his soul and for divine strength for those he left behind to bear what it described as an irreparable loss.
“May his worthy legacies continue to inspire us, and may his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
Comrade Hakeem Akintunde is remembered as a devoted journalist and union leader whose impact on sports journalism and media practice in Ogun State will not be forgotten.
