The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, is set to commence the second edition of its flagship educational outreach programme, “Engineering and You,” designed to promote early interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among secondary school students in Ogun State.
Following the successful first edition, which featured an engaging STEM quiz competition involving 16 private schools, the second edition will focus on an Engineering-themed debate competition. This new phase aims not only to expose students to current issues in Engineering and technology but also to enhance their communication, public speaking, and critical thinking skills.
In a statement released by the Chairman of NSE Abeokuta Branch, Engr. Olumayowa A. Idowu, FNSE, the programme will feature 30 schools in total, comprising 15 private and 15 public secondary schools. The competition is scheduled to begin on Friday, May 2, 2025.
“This initiative is part of our broader commitment to inspire the next generation of Engineers and thinkers. By blending technical topics with debate, we are helping these students to see Engineering beyond the classroom—as a vital tool for innovation, development, and national transformation,” the Chairman stated.
In an exciting twist, the finalists from the debate session will later compete in a STEM Subjects Quiz Competition to determine the top three winners of the programme—further blending knowledge with healthy competition.
The programme is fully sponsored by distinguished philanthropist and renowned Engineer, Engr. Prince Yemisi Shyllon, FNSE, and will be broadcast live on Ogun State Television (OGTV), DSTV Channel 260, thereby extending its impact to a broader audience.
Originally launched as a televised personality interview series featuring seasoned engineers sharing insights and experiences to motivate the younger generation, the “Engineering and You” programme has now evolved into a vibrant competition platform. It remains one of the most impactful youth-focused initiatives by the NSE Abeokuta Branch, and this second edition promises to deepen its influence, stimulate intellectual curiosity, and foster a stronger STEM culture across Ogun State.
