The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, recently conducted a technical visit to the Lafarge Africa Plc Sagamu Plant as part of its professional engagement and knowledge-sharing initiatives aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Engineering profession and the industrial sector.

The delegation was led by the Chairman of the NSE Abeokuta Branch, Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, FNSE, who emphasized the importance of industry–academia and professional collaboration in advancing Engineering practice and national development. In his address, Engr. Idowu noted that the visit provided members of the Branch the opportunity to observe modern industrial engineering processes, appreciate technological innovations in cement manufacturing, and gain insights into ongoing infrastructural improvements within the plant.

He commended Lafarge Africa Plc for its continued investment in technological advancement and industrial capacity expansion in Nigeria, describing the Sagamu Plant as a critical contributor to the nation’s infrastructure development and economic growth.

Responding on behalf of the management of Lafarge Africa Plc, the Plant Manager, Engr. Adedeji Esan, welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abeokuta Branch, for the visit. He highlighted the company’s commitment to operational excellence, safety, sustainability, and continuous technological improvement in cement production. He also assured the Branch of Lafarge’s readiness to explore the collaboration areas highlighted during the meeting.

During the visit, the Chairman of the NSE Abeokuta Branch presented the NSE Certificate of Registration to the Plant Manager, Engr. Adedeji Esan, following his recent induction into the Nigerian Society of Engineers by the Branch.

The delegation subsequently toured the facility and inspected the ongoing expansion work at the Sagamu Plant, where Lafarge Africa is currently undertaking a major upgrade aimed at strengthening its cement production capacity in Nigeria. The expansion project is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency and increase the plant’s production capacity to about 3.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA).

The upgrade includes the installation of two new kiln lines incorporating modern cement manufacturing technology, which will further improve productivity and support the growing demand for cement in Nigeria’s construction and infrastructure sectors.

At the end of the visit, both the NSE Abeokuta delegation and Lafarge management reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration, particularly in creating opportunities for capacity development, technical exposure, and mentorship for young Engineers.
