The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, has concluded a historic Leadership and Legacy Roundtable, an event that brought together past Branch Chairmen, Engineering elders, Permanent Secretaries, senior professionals, and key stakeholders to celebrate the Branch’s rich history, strengthen institutional memory, and promote seamless leadership succession.
The Roundtable, held at Shishi’s Cuisine, GRA, Abeokuta, was convened by the Branch Chairman and Chairman of the Forum of NSE Branch Chairmen, Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, FNSE, as part of activities marking the successful completion of his administration. Participants described the gathering as a landmark initiative that not only honoured the sacrifices of former leaders but also established a sustainable framework for preserving the Branch’s values, traditions, and leadership culture.
Addressing participants, Engr. Idowu described the gathering as a symbolic meeting of the Branch’s past, present, and future. He stressed that the strength of any institution lies in its ability to preserve continuity and ensure that each administration builds on the successes of those before it. Reviewing the achievements recorded during his tenure, he highlighted the transformation of the Branch Secretariat, expansion of professional development programmes through technical lectures and capacity-building initiatives, enhanced welfare support for members and the families of deceased colleagues, the establishment and empowerment of the Young Engineers Forum, improved public visibility through strategic branding and media engagement, stronger collaboration with government institutions, the signing of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), and increased advocacy for quality engineering infrastructure and greater participation of professional engineers in governance.
The Roundtable became a celebration of leadership excellence as past Chairmen and engineering elders paid glowing tributes to the outgoing administration. They described Engr. Idowu as a visionary leader whose administration had redefined leadership within the Abeokuta Branch through innovation, inclusiveness, strategic partnerships, and measurable achievements. While acknowledging the invaluable contributions of previous administrations, they noted that his tenure had successfully consolidated their legacies and elevated the Branch to unprecedented levels of relevance and visibility. Speakers commended his ability to unite members across generations, strengthen relationships with government and private institutions, improve infrastructure, prioritise youth development, and project the image of the Branch nationally and internationally. Many described the administration as a benchmark that future leaders would strive to emulate.
Speaking on behalf of the Elders Forum, Engr. Micheal Kayode Adeniji, FNSE, praised the initiative for creating an enduring platform for dialogue between former and current leaders, noting that it would help preserve the institutional memory of the Branch for generations to come. The most senior Past Chairman in attendance, Engr. Oyewole Lateef Oyewunmi, FNSE, reflected on the evolution of the Branch and urged future administrations to remain committed to professionalism, integrity, accountability, and selfless service. Other past Chairmen applauded Engr. Idowu for his humility, consultative leadership style, respect for his predecessors, and willingness to draw lessons from previous administrations while introducing bold initiatives that strengthened the Branch’s growth and unity.
The event also featured goodwill messages from eminent engineering leaders, including the Vice President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Engr. Olu Ogunduyile, FNSE, who commended the Roundtable as an innovative model for leadership succession, institutional continuity, and knowledge sharing within professional bodies. One of the highlights of the programme was the presentation of appreciation plaques to past Branch Chairmen and distinguished Engineering elders in recognition of their unwavering dedication, sacrifices, and enduring contributions to the advancement of the Branch and the engineering profession.
As the event came to a close, participants unanimously expressed confidence in Engr. Idowu’s future, wishing him greater success in higher leadership responsibilities within the engineering profession and national service. They described his administration as one that had surpassed expectations through purposeful leadership, strategic vision, and impactful programmes that significantly raised the profile of the Abeokuta Branch. According to them, the Branch has become one of the most vibrant, respected, and progressive branches within the Nigerian Society of Engineers, with a legacy of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and continuity that will continue to inspire future generations of engineering leaders. The Leadership and Legacy Roundtable was widely celebrated as a defining chapter in the history of the Branch and a fitting tribute to visionary leadership and institutional excellence.
