Gateway International Airport: Ogun’s Bold Leap into Global Aviation and Agro-Logistics

The commissioning of the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Iperu-Ilishan, Ogun State, marks a defining moment in Nigeria’s aviation and economic landscape—one that signals a strategic shift toward regional connectivity, agro-export expansion, and infrastructure-driven development.

Officially inaugurated last Saturday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the airport is truly a legacy project with the capacity to reshape Ogun State’s economic future and ease pressure on the aviation infrastructure in nearby Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. Its commissioning is not just the unveiling of a new facility, it is the opening of a new economic frontier.

Situated in Iperu-Ilisan axis in Ikenne Local Government Area, the Gateway International Airport is designed as both an agro-cargo hub and passenger facility. Its strategic proximity to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway positions it as a logistics gateway for southwestern Nigeria and beyond.

The airport with a 4-kilometre runway, is capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A380, underscoring its readiness for international operations. More than just an aviation facility, the airport is conceived as a catalyst for Agro-export development
Industrial growth, job creation and regional trade integration.
At the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu lauded the vision behind the project, describing it as a transformative initiative.

“I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to celebrate the remarkable vision of a governor and his predecessors,” he said
He emphasized that the airport aligns with his administration’s economic agenda, particularly in boosting infrastructure and positioning Nigeria as a competitive investment destination.
Tinubu also noted that projects of this scale demonstrate how subnational governments can complement federal efforts in driving sustainable development.

Also speaking at the event, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a prominent son of the State, commended the initiative, describing it as a long-envisioned project now brought to fruition, even as he praised the commitment to continuity in governance and acknowledged the importance of infrastructure in unlocking economic potential. His presence added historical and political weight to the occasion, reinforcing the project’s significance as a legacy milestone.

For Governor Dapo Abiodun, the airport represents more than infrastructure—it is a deliberate economic strategy. He reiterated that the project is aligned with Ogun State’s industrial and agricultural strengths, positioning the state as a major logistics hub, preferred investment destination and a key player in Nigeria’s non-oil export drive.

Abiodun highlighted that the airport would facilitate the movement of agro-produce to international markets, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance value chains by attracting cargo airlines and logistics operators, with projections of significant cargo traffic in the near future.

One of the most immediate benefits of the Gateway International Airport is its potential to serve as an alternative to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

By diverting cargo and passenger traffic, the facility is expected to boost industrial growth in Ogun and neighbouring states and enhance regional connectivity. This complementary role will strengthen the aviation ecosystem in the south western part of Nigeria.

The airport’s impact is expected to extend far beyond aviation. There is the expected multiplier effect across sectors, including agriculture (export of perishables), manufacturing (logistics efficiency), real estate (increased land value around the corridor) and tourism (improved accessibility). Given Ogun State’s strong industrial base and agricultural output, the airport provides the missing link between production and global markets.

The presence of both President Tinubu and former President Obasanjo at the commissioning underscores a rare moment of political convergence—one that highlights the importance of continuity in national development. The project itself embodies years of planning, investment, and policy alignment, demonstrating how long-term vision can translate into tangible outcomes.

With commercial operations already underway and regulatory approvals in place, the focus now shifts to scaling operations, attracting international carriers, and maximizing cargo throughput.

If fully optimized, the Gateway International Airport could become Nigeria’s leading agro-cargo hub, a model for state-driven infrastructure development and a key node in West Africa’s logistics network
As Bola Ahmed Tinubu aptly noted, it represents “a remarkable vision.” For Governor Abiodun, it is a gateway to prosperity. And for former President Obasanjo, it stands as a testament to what visionary leadership can achieve.

In the years ahead, the true measure of this project will lie in how effectively it transforms potential into prosperity, not just for Ogun State, but for Nigeria as a whole.
