
In the spirit of taking-off of the FEDERAL UNIVERSITY of MEDICINE and MEDICAL SCIENCES, Abeokuta, efforts are on top gear to ensure a one-off beginning and a smooth medical academic activities.
This is as the Vice Chancellor of the Medical Institution, Prof. FATIU AROGUNDADE is ensuring that no stone is left unturned to hit the target date of commencement set for September 2025, especially with the three take off courses which include Medicine, Nursing and Medical Rehabilitation.
Recall that Prof. AROGUNDADE was appointed by the President Bola Hammed Tinubu as the Vice Chancellor of the institution on the 10th of April and was inaugurated on the 19th of the same month, with the members of Governing Council.
Since the inauguration, the VC has been on tours to relevant stakeholders both locally and internationally to seek professional advice, support and motivation. He has also had a series of meetings with the people of the host community, particularly those whose lands fall directly in the allocated land for the Institution.
FUMMSA is located at Ajibayo Village, Ajebo Road, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Abeokuta, Ogun State and is sitting on 177 hectares of land where state of the heart facilities shall be erected for medical academic purposes.
Prof. AROGUNDADE, the Vice Chancellor is the College Registrar of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) and immediate past President of Transplant Association of Nigeria, Member of Executive Committee and Council of International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and Chair of the African Regional Board.
The VC had his basic medical degree from the University of Lagos and Postgraduate training at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife. He is a fellow of Medical College in Physic (FMCP), West African College of Physicians (FWACP), Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCPEdin), Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP) Nigeria Academy of Medicine (FNAMed), and Nigerian Association of Nephrology (FNAN), He has Doctor of Medicine (MD). He served as Vice-Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, OAU between 2011-2013.
Members of the Governing Council of FUMMSA include – Dr. Obayomi Olukayode Gregory as Registrar, Mrs. Adedokun Omolola Olufunso as Bursar and Dr. Idiat Odunola Agboola as University Librarian.
With the taking off of the FUMMSA, the nation is assured of regular and constant admission of medicine students to its capacity, there by reducing the numbers of students who find it difficult to secure admission to study medicine.
In terms of employment, FUMMSA upon full operation is capable of employment over four thousand employees, thereby contributing to the economic boost via recruitment.
Furthermore, FUMMSA will join in the production of capable and professional medical experts that the nation is currently in dire need of.
Finally, the entire people of Ogun State and the neighbouring states should at this time begin congratulating each other for the opportunities that the Medical Institution will offer.
