Bayewunmi Blasts School Owner, Governor’s Liaison Officer Over ‘Wasted Generation’ Remark; Cites Student Now Studying Medicine at University of Ibadan Through Babatunde bayewunmi’s Foundation

An aspirant for the Ogun State House of Assembly, Abeokuta North Constituency, Hon. Babatunde Bayewunmi, has strongly criticised a recent remark by a school owner and a Governor’s Liaison Officer describing Nigerian youths as a “wasted generation,” calling it irresponsible and disconnected from reality.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Bayewunmi said the comment goes beyond a careless expression, warning that it reflects a troubling mindset, particularly from individuals in positions of authority within government and the education sector.
“Let me be clear, this is not just a careless statement; it is a mindset that must be firmly rejected,” he said.
Bayewunmi argued that such remarks undermine the achievements of young Nigerians who continue to excel despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

He cited beneficiaries of the Babatunde Bayewunmi Foundation some of whom attended the school owned by the individual in question, who are now studying Medicine at the University of Ibadan and Pharmacy at the University of Maiduguri, as evidence of the resilience and potential of the younger generation.
“I will not be silent when the same generation producing top-performing students is dismissed so casually,” he added.

The Canada-based politician stressed that the issue transcends politics, describing it as a matter of leadership responsibility.

According to him, public office holders and educators must recognise the weight of their words and the influence they wield over young minds.

“Those privileged to lead must understand that their words shape minds and influence futures. To label young people as ‘wasted’ is to fail in that responsibility,” he said.
Reaffirming his support for Nigerian youths, Bayewunmi maintained that they remain resilient, capable, and full of promise, urging leaders to prioritise empowerment over discouragement.

“They are not wasted. They are rising. And as leaders, we must choose to build them, or step aside for those who will,” he stated.
