The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, in partnership with renowned philanthropist and Engineer, Engr. Prince Yemisi Shyllon, FNSE, has celebrated academic excellence among secondary school students in Ogun State with the presentation of prizes to winners of the “Engineering & You” STEM Debate Competition.

The initiative is designed to strengthen interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among young learners.

Speaking during the prize presentation ceremony held at the NSE Abeokuta Secretariat on March 10, 2026, the Branch Chairman, Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, FNSE, described the programme as a strategic investment in the future of engineering and national development. He explained that the initiative encourages critical thinking, communication skills and scientific curiosity among students while inspiring them to pursue careers in STEM-related fields.

According to him, the programme has evolved over the years from personality interviews with senior engineers to STEM quiz competitions and now a debate format aimed at strengthening both technical knowledge and communication abilities of participating students. He noted that the future of innovation, infrastructure and national development depends largely on how well young minds are prepared and motivated, adding that NSE Abeokuta remains committed to contributing meaningfully to STEM development in Ogun State.

Engr. Idowu expressed profound appreciation to the sponsor of the initiative, Prince Engr. Yemisi Shyllon, FNSE, for his consistent support since the inception of the programme. He noted that Shyllon has not only sponsored the initiative but has also remained actively involved in its development and growth, demonstrating a strong commitment to nurturing young talents and promoting STEM education across the state.

The Chairman stated that the competition, which commenced on May 7, 2025, featured 16 private schools paired with 16 public schools across Ogun State, thereby creating a broader and more inclusive platform for students to showcase their intellectual abilities.

In his remarks, the sponsor of the programme, Prince Engr. Yemisi Shyllon, FNSE, commended the leadership of Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abeokuta Branch, for sustaining an initiative that promotes academic excellence and inspires young people to embrace science and engineering. He emphasized that investing in education and youth development remains critical for Nigeria’s technological advancement and future prosperity.

Also speaking at the event, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, who was represented by Mrs. Olukolu Esther Omolola, praised NSE Abeokuta for the noble initiative. She noted that the programme reflects the Society’s commitment to promoting engineering consciousness and strengthening students’ interest in STEM education across the state.

At the end of the competition, students from Ebenezer Grammar School — Adelakun Stephen Iyanuoluwa and Akinola Saheedat Idowu — emerged overall winners, clinching the first position and receiving a trophy, cash award, plaque, medals and certificates of commendation.

Rev. Kuti Memorial Grammar School, represented by Lemboye Moses Oluwatimileyin and Oderinde Bethel Oluwapamilerin, came second, while Jacobs High School, Ota, represented by Adeogun Adeola and Bamidele Deborah, secured the third position. The second and third place winners were also presented with cash awards, plaques, medals and certificates of commendation.

In addition, special commendations were presented to outstanding students from Abeokuta Grammar School, St. Peters College Olomore, and Baptist Boys High School, Saje, who ranked among the top six performers in the competition.

Engr. Idowu expressed delight at the impressive performance of public schools in the competition, noting that the results clearly demonstrated that talent, intelligence and potential exist everywhere when students are given the right opportunity and encouragement. He also urged government at all levels to continue investing in public education, particularly in STEM facilities, laboratories and teacher development, to further strengthen Nigeria’s education system.

The event concluded with the presentation of prizes and commendation awards to the winning schools and outstanding students, as NSE Abeokuta reaffirmed its commitment to promoting STEM education and inspiring the next generation of engineers in Nigeria.
