…as Convener Canvasses For Ogun State Collaboration in next edition
The debut edition of the Gateway Snooker Tournament, founded and convened by Afolabi Roseline Bolanle popularly known as Ruby has been described as a landmark Sporting activities in Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday at the press centre, Iwe iroyin Abeokuta, Ruby outlined the tournament’s achievements and projects for a larger, Africa‑wide competition.
The three‑day tournament, held earlier this in December attracted 32 of the country’s top snooker players, including Guinness World Record holder Shehu Abana and several players ranked in the top ten nationally.
Over 1,500 spectators from across Nigeria filled the venue to capacity, turning the event into a national showcase and underscoring the growing popularity of snooker in the region.
According to Ruby, “This edition was truly remarkable,” from the first break to the final shot, the passion, energy and crowd engagement showed that we are changing the narrative for snooker in Nigeria.”
She added that the tournament’s success had reinforced its status as a respected and influential competition within the snooker community.
She therefore appreciates the tournament’s sponsors, the participating players, volunteers and the media for their support.
“Your commitment made this edition exceptional,” she said, thanking the team for their “dedication, sleepless nights and loyalty.”
In readiness for the next edition, Ruby appealed to the Ogun State government to partner with the next edition of the Gateway Snooker Tournament to upgrade facilities, attract international players, train youths and promote the sport as a source of pride for the state.
“This project is more than entertainment—it is a developmental initiative,” she said.
According to Ruby, the upcoming tournament will feature an enhanced structure, broader sponsorship opportunities, improved production values, a larger roster of professional players and expanded visibility targeting audiences across Africa.
The Gateway Snooker Tournament, now positioned as an emerging African snooker brand, is set to continue its growth under Ruby’s leadership, promising to bring further recognition to Ogun State and the Nigerian snooker scene.
