…Commends New NSE Abeokuta Chairman Engr. Olumayowa Idowu for his commitment to excellence and innovation in engineering field

The Ogun state Government has charged engineers to be problem solvers and shoulder the task of finding lasting solutions to society’s most pressing challenges rather than being practitioners in the noble profession.

The Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot salako-Oyedele stated this during the Inauguration of Engineer Olumayowa Idowu as the 17th Chairman of Nigeria Society of Engineers, Abeokuta Chapter.

Speaking on the theme” Fostering Industrial growth and national development: The role of engineering, and innovation in driving Nigeria’s Economic transformation” She noted that engineering has always been at the heart of economic progress, from infrastructure to technology, from industrialization to digital transformation, adding that engineers build the system that drives growth as no sustainable development can be achieved without harnessing the power of engineering and innovation.

She added further that to fully realise Nigeria’s potential in Industrial and technological transformation ,there is urgent need to recognise and empower engineers as they play critical roles in shaping Nigeria’s economy.

The Deputy Governor also reiterated the need for Nigerians to recommit themselves to the vision of a technologically advanced and industrially vibrant Nigeria.

While describing the Election of Engineer Olumayowa Idowu as the 17th Chairman of NSE, Abeokuta, as a recognition of his commitment to excellence, innovation and leadership in the field of engineering, she expressed optimism that his tenure would be a driving force in shaping the future of engineering in Ogun state and beyond.

“The world is undergoing a Fourth Industrial Revolution, where artificial intelligence, automation, and smart technologies are redefining industries. Nigerian engineers must be at the forefront of this transformation, driving the adoption of smart manufacturing, robotics, and industrial automation.

“The global shift towards green energy presents a significant opportunity for Nigeria. Engineering innovation in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower costs for industries, and support environmental sustainability.

“We must ensure that the next generation of Nigerian engineers is equipped with the skills needed to drive industrial transformation. This requires a strong focus on STEM education, vocational training, and upskilling programs to keep pace with global engineering advancements.

“THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT AND POLICYMAKERS

The government plays a crucial role in creating an enabling environment for engineering-driven industrial growth. Key policy actions should include:
• Investment in Infrastructure and Technology – Prioritizing funding for roads, power, and digital infrastructure.
• Incentives for Innovation – Providing tax breaks, grants, and support for research and development in engineering and manufacturing.
• Public-Private Partnerships – Encouraging collaboration between government, private sector, and engineering bodies to implement large-scale industrial projects.

In Ogun State, under the leadership of His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, we have made significant strides in creating an industrial-friendly environment, with investments in infrastructure, technology hubs, and business incentives. We remain committed to positioning Ogun as Nigeria’s leading industrial hub, where engineering and innovation can thrive.

CALL TO ACTION FOR ENGINEERS

As engineers, we must rise to the occasion:

• Be problem-solvers, not just practitioners. Engineering is not just about technical expertise; it is about finding solutions to society’s most pressing challenges.

• Embrace innovation and continuous learning. The future belongs to those who adapt to new technologies and global best practices.

• Advocate for engineering leadership in national development. We must engage policymakers, industry leaders, and investors to ensure engineering remains a priority in development agendas.” She concluded

On her part ,The President, Nigeria Society of Engineers, Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala urged Engineer Olumayowa and his Executive Committee members to serve with diligence and passion.

She also charged the new administration to ensure that Community Engineering remains at the top of their agenda.
” Engineering is about impact, and our relevance as a professional body is measured by the difference we make in society.
” I challenge the leadership of NSE Abeokuta Branch to swing into action in this regard and extend an invitation to me shortly to come and commission meaningful engineering projects that will benefit the people of this great State.”

Delivering his inaugural speech, the new NSE Chairman, Abeokuta Chapter, Engr. Olumayowa Idowu FNSE assured that integrity, innovation, and inclusiveness will never be compromised as him and his team are committed to building on the achievements of his predecessors and fostering professional growth to drive impactful engineering solutions that will elevate the profession.

He noted that his strategic priorities include enhancing capacity development, strengthening industry, and government collaboration, expanding membership engagement, advancing engineering advocacy, community impact and publicity, and secretariat development.

He said his emergence as a youngest individual to ever hold the branch chairmanship position was not just a personal milestone but a testament to the dynamism, inclusivity, and progressive vision of the society.

The Event which also climaxed the 2025 edition of the week-long engineering week witnessed the induction of new members into NSE, Abeokuta branch
