The Nigeria Union of Pensioners has commended the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun for approving a Health Insurance Scheme for retired public servants in Ogun State, describing the initiative as a landmark intervention aimed at improving the welfare of pensioners.
In a letter addressed to the governor through the Head of Service, the union said the approval would address one of the major challenges confronting retirees, particularly access to affordable and timely healthcare amid rising medical costs and economic hardship.
The letter, signed by the State Chairman of the union, Comrade Alhaji (Chief) W.O. Oloyede, and the State Secretary, Comrade (Dr) Bola Lawal, JP, expressed gratitude to the governor for what it described as a compassionate and pensioners-friendly policy.
According to the union, advancing age comes with increased medical needs, while the financial burden on pensioners has remained overwhelming due to meagre pensions. It noted that the inclusion of retirees in the state’s health insurance scheme demonstrated the government’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of senior citizens.
The pensioners stated that the initiative had reinforced their confidence in the administration, stressing that retirement should not translate into abandonment or hardship after years of service to the state.
While applauding the governor for the approval, the union also appealed to the state government to approve the long-awaited consequential adjustment of pensions for pensioners in Ogun State.
The union recalled that a committee on the consequential adjustment of pensions was inaugurated on July 19, 2022, by the Secretary to the State Government at the instance of the governor, but noted that many pensioners who retired several years ago still earn pensions that do not reflect subsequent salary reviews in the public service.
The pensioners explained that the adjustment had become necessary in view of the prevailing economic realities, inflation, and increasing cost of living, adding that the approval would help restore dignity and fairness to retirees.
The union further pledged its support for the administration’s “Building Our Future Together” agenda and promised to sensitize members on the proper use of the health insurance scheme to ensure its sustainability.
It also offered prayers for the governor, asking for wisdom, strength, and good health for him to continue leading the state.
