The Provost of the Civil Defence College of Security Management, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, Assistant Commandant General Akintelure Niyi Olufisayo, has called on security managers to take urgent action to manage environmental risks and build resilience for a sustainable future.
Delivering a speech at the commemoration of the 2026 World Civil Defence Day, Akintelure emphasized the critical role of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in addressing environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation.
“Climate-related disasters, pollution, and resource depletion are just a few examples of the complex issues we must address,” he said, adding that these issues are no longer just environmental concerns, but security issues that exacerbate conflicts, displace communities, and strain resources.
The College Provost outlined key strategies for managing environmental risks, including climate-smart planning, ecosystem conservation, sustainable resource management, disaster risk reduction, and green infrastructure development.
ACG Akintelure urged security managers to champion these efforts, collaborate with stakeholders, and drive innovation, stressing that the NSCDC’s commitment to environmental risk management will enhance national security, promote sustainable development, and protect citizens.
The commemoration of World Civil Defence Day also served as an opportunity to celebrate the extension of tenure in office and reappointment of the Corps Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi.
The Provost, Management, and Staff of the Civil Defence College of Security Management congratulated Prof. Audi on his reappointment, praising his exemplary, visionary, and people-centred leadership.
“We are confident that this extension of your tenure will usher in even greater achievements, enhanced operational excellence, and more far-reaching benefits for the Corps and the nation at large,” the statement read.
