NICRAT,OGUN Government Train Health Workers on Cancer Screening Integration

Towards enhancing early detection and treatment of cervical and breast cancers among women of reproductive age across the nation, the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) and the Ogun State Government had organized a 2-day training program for healthcare workers on integrating cancer screening into family planning services.

The training, which kicked off in Abeokuta, was expected to equip healthcare workers with the necessary skills to  integrate cancer screening during family planning consultations using it as an opportunity to ensure clients get dual benefits of family planning and cancer screening services.

Speaking at the training, Director General of NICRAT Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, said that the organization was established to to lead Nigeria in fighting cancer through high-quality research, evidence-based treatment, prevention, and control, aiming to reduce cancer burden and improve lives via data, policy, and competent personnel.

The DG who was represented by Mrs. Olabisi Folorunso-Lanlehin, noted that the capacity-building programme was aimed at strengthening cancer prevention and control within the health system, saying that the engagement underscores NICRAT’s commitment to building a skilled, responsive, and integrated workforce capable of delivering effective cancer screening, prevention and early detection services, particularly at the primary health care level.

He emphasized that the Renewed Hope Initiative of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has given a steadfast commitment to the fight against cervical cancer has made significant and tangible impact on the project, saying beyond its immediate gains, the laudable intervention would continue to influence positive health outcomes in cervical cancer prevention and care and control across the country.

In her presentation, the State Team Lead, Dr Salmat Sanni said that breast cancer continues to pose a serious public health challenge in Nigeria, with cases and mortality rates steadily increasing across the country. Despite advances in medical knowledge, awareness and early detection remain critically low, leading many patients to seek medical attention only at advanced stages of the disease, saying this late presentation has contributed significantly to poor treatment outcomes and higher death rates.

She noted that Community Health Workers (CHEWs) have been identified as vital agents in this effort, given their close ties to local communities. By leveraging their presence and social influence, CHEWs would help promote breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection, and bridge the gap between communities and healthcare facilities, ultimately improving outcomes for women across Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mrs  Kehinde Sanni from Abeokuta South Local government appreciated NICRAT and Ogun State Government for the training experience and assured that they would translate the practical experience and knowledge gained into practical service.
